The two nations, Iran and the United States are embarking on very critical talks in Oman on Friday as the military and diplomatic pressure mounts between them and each other as both persist in trying to revive dialogue and threat to give dire outcomes in case of failure. Even as Washington insists that diplomacy is still an option, the US President Donald Trump has threatened that something bad may occur in the event of no agreement.
The negotiations are being held on a stressed background as the US has dramatically boosted its military outposts around Iran. Trump has labeled the deployment as a formidable armada and highlights how Washington is ready to put the pressure on in case the talks breakdown. Simultaneously, there have been profound rifts on the extent and intention of the discussions and this has cast uncertainties on whether the discussions can halt further deterioration of an already frail Middle East.
The talks will be approached with a lot of caution as Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi revealed that past experiences have influenced the strategy Tehran will take when it comes to the negotiations. Stressing the importance of equality and mutual respect, he claimed that any agreement should be constructed on the terms of equality and keeping the promises. In a post on X, Araghchi said that Iran is diplomating in good faith but it will strongly protect its rights, saying that lasting agreements must be on equal terms and interests and not rhetoric.
During the negotiations in Muscat, the main agenda should be the nuclear programme of Iran. Both Washington and Tehran have indicated the readiness to re-enter the world of diplomacy, but the prospects vary greatly. The US has stated that it would like the negotiations to extend beyond the nuclear challenge and incorporate the Iranian ballistic missile programme, its encouragement of armed organizations operating in the region, and its human rights practices.
This was reiterated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who declared that Washington would like to have a wholesome dialogue that would encompass the nuclear programs, missile prowess, and influence in the region, as well as the domestic policies of Iran.
