On Monday, the officials confirmed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an alleged cybercriminal after a massive, multi-state effort to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes. The operation, operating in 35 locations in 10 states, one of them being Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal, formed a part of a bigger multinational crackdown that involved law enforcement agencies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Kuwait, Ireland, and Singapore.
The investigation, dubbed Operation CyStrike, was initiated on January 30 and it was geared towards breaking down the transnational cybercrime networks that were targeting the victims in other countries as well as in India. In the raids, the CBI found and disrupted several networks located in India of which one of the largest networks was located in New Delhi, which mainly attacked US victims via the internet. One of the key operatives was caught right on the spot and a big haul of electronic equipment such as laptops, mobile phones, computer hard disk with digital evidence that was incriminating against him were also confiscated.
Besides this, the agency compromised another network that was running under the domain name eservicemoi-Kw.com, which was purporting to offer Kuwaiti e-Visas and work opportunities with leading firms in Kuwait to the Indian nationals and demanding money. The CBI seized laptops, cell phones, computer hard disk, bogus e-Visas, forged appointment letters, and cash worth Rs. 60 lakh.
According to the CBI spokesperson, such operations have been a huge strike to organized cybercrime networks, hence no more financial loss to both local and foreign victims. The government stressed that the action shows that the agency is dedicated to fighting financial fraud facilitated by cyber means and works together with international law agencies to address transnational crimes effectively. The suspect is in custody of the CBI and more investigations are being done to isolate and arrest more suspects who are affiliated to these networks.
