At 90, the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, has won his first Grammy, a global award for his spoken-word album, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The Tibetan leader was honored at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on February 1, 2026, in Los Angeles, taking home the trophy for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. The ceremony, held in Los Angeles, was attended by prominent figures from across the entertainment world. The Dalai Lama’s win in the spoken-word category was noted as a significant achievement for a figure best known outside the music industry.

A Victory for Compassion

The winning project, titled Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is a spoken-word album that weaves his profound teachings into a rich tapestry of sound. The album beat out a diverse field of nominees, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and comedian Trevor Noah.

The Dalai Lama had collaborated with sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and his sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, on the album, blending spoken word and music to celebrate universal values of peace, compassion, kindness and hope.

In the category, other nominations included Kathy Garver (Elvis, Rocky & Me: The Carol Connors Story), Trevor Noah (Into The Uncut Grass), Ketanji Brown Jackson (Lovely One: A Memoir) and Fab Morvan (You Know It’s True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli).

Accepted on his behalf by Rufus Wainwright, the award signifies a milestone for the Recording Academy in recognizing storytelling that transcends traditional music. By bringing his message of “the oneness of humanity” to the Grammy stage, the Dalai Lama has successfully bridged the gap between ancient Buddhist philosophy and modern global media, ensuring his teachings on peace and kindness reach a new generation of listeners.
