Mumbai: Sunetra Pawar, 62, took the oath of office as deputy chief minister of Maharashtra on Saturday, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the history of the state, though in tragic circumstances. She succeeds her husband, Ajit Pawar, who died in a plane crash on January 28.

The NCP held its Legislature Party meeting on Saturday (January 31, 2026) to choose its new leader to replace Ajit, where Ms. Pawar was elected unanimously.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, NCP leaders Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare and Chhagan Bhujbal, among others, were present at the ceremony.
