A medical examination was performed on Sonam Wangchuk, an activist and scientist who has been imprisoned in Jodhpur Central Jail since September 27, 2025, when officials confirmed early on Saturday that he was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhura. He had estimated one and a half hours at the hospital, where he was seen by the specialists of the gastroenterology department, after which he was taken on a visit back to the jail.
According to the hospital sources, Wangchuk has been having stomach-related ailments for some time. He had visited AIIMS Jodhpur on Friday, a day prior to, to get medical tests connected to the same issue. Doctors are also allegedly performing additional tests to determine the cause and severity of his complication.
The medical visit is based on the orders of the Supreme Court, where a petition has already been filed by the wife of Wangchuk on his medical condition and custody status. The top court has urged the elaborate medical report about his situation, and the same is supposed to be provided by February 2.
According to the instructions of the Supreme Court, a police official stated that Wangchuk was moved out of the central jail to the emergency department of AIIMS Jodhpur. On Thursday, a bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice P. B. Varale had instructed jail officers to make sure that Wangchuk is screened by a specialist gastroenterologist in a government hospital.
In the case, Additional Solicitor General K. M. Nataraj, who was defending the Rajasthan government, told the court that in the last four months, jail doctors had examined Wangchuk 21 times, and the last examination was carried out on January 26. But Wangchuk was advised by his counsel, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who refuted this allegation on the grounds that his client is still experiencing stomach pains, which he claims to be a result of bad water quality within the jail.
The medical findings will be analysed by the Supreme Court, which will then make a decision on the course of action to be taken afterwards.
