On Wednesday, the Uttarakhand Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, gave its consent to the Uttarakhand Green Hydrogen Policy, 2026, a significant move towards the reinforcement of the clean energy infrastructure of the state. The policy will stimulate the creation of green hydrogen utilizing the enormous capacity of hydropower in Uttarakhand which according to the officials would be instrumental in assisting the state in achieving its net-zero emission target as well as promoting industrialization and the creation of jobs.
The new policy is in line with the National Green Hydrogen Policy, 2022, and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, 2023 as stipulated by state government officials. The Union government has under these national initiatives established a challenging goal of making India a global center in the production of green hydrogen in the coming decade. The policy of the state should stimulate investment, spur development of clean energy technologies, and develop a favorable environment of hydrogen-related industries.
The Cabinet also made another major decision, in which ground water extraction charges on non-agricultural and commercial use were to be implemented immediately. Such charges will not be applied to government drinking water supply schemes and agriculture. The industries, hotels, group housing societies, water parks, vehicle-washing centres and the like will be required to pay charges as per the availability of the groundwater as safe, semi-critical, critical and over-exploited zones. The commercial and industrial users have also been introduced to a mandatory registration cost amounting to 5,000.
A motion by the Cabinet enabling health workers and health supervisors under the medical, health and family welfare department to make a one-time inter-district transfer throughout their service in the service also passed, on the condition that they had completed at least five years of satisfactory service in their home cadres.
Also, the Cabinet sanctioned the giving of the Chinyalisaur airstrip in Uttarkashi and the Gauchar airstrip in Chamoli to the Ministry of Defence on lease basis.
