A big operation conducted by the Khandwa police of Madhya Pradesh against an illegal factory producing firecrackers revealed a large-scale production facility where explosives of the sutli bomb were being produced. The factory was housed in an empty house in a colony in Sinhada village which is allegedly an old clubhouse in Yashwant Silawat, which is purported to have leased the house. Close to 20 quintals of sutli bombs and gunpowder were recovered by the police at the location.
The crackdown was on the basis of recurrent intelligence reports that illegitimate manufacture of sutli bombs was going on in Khandwa. The police acted on the information and intensified their surveillance and finally raided the abandoned house in the colony at Sinhada road. A special team was constituted to conduct the operation. The accused seized the chance presented by darkness to escape as soon as they spotted the police. Nonetheless, the police arrested a pickup truck carrying explosives and a scooter discovered close to the area.
Khandwa Police Superintendent Manoj Kumar Rai stated that the suspects had been gathering huge quantities of explosive materials at the clubhouse and were about to ferry the bombs using the pickup vehicle. In the process, the police found the explosives, as well as raw materials and equipment to make the bombs. The weight of the material confiscated is approximately 20 quintals whose market value is supposed to be about 20 lakh.
Some of the materials that were confiscated included the sutli bombs, gunpowder, coloured powders, fuse threads, trays, drums, tubs, cardboard strips, and other manufacturing tools. A two-wheeler that was owned by a suspect by the name Imran Piryani, who is a shop owner of firecrackers, was also impounded and is under investigations.
It is registered in the Explosives Act, 1908, and many sections of the Indian Penal Code at Kotwali police station. The police are still on their investigation to trace the missing suspects and establish any other connection in the illegal explosives network.
