Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in a press conference on Tuesday that a new line of metro system was approved by the state cabinet linking Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will be a massive boost to passengers, airline employees and cargo companies as the 35-kilometre project aims at enhancing the linkage between the two key aviation centres.

According to Fadnavis, the line of the metro that is proposed will be 35km long with a 9km beneath the ground segment. It will have 25 stations and will overlap three other metro routes, which will enhance easier transportation throughout the Mumbai metropolitan area. The project is estimated to be priced at 18,000 crore.

The government of the state has given its consent on a public-private partnership (PPP) project. According to this structure, the state and the central governments will provide 20 percent of viability gap funding on each side with the rest 60 percent to be contributed by the private developer who will be tasked to construct the metro.

Fadnavis said that the project is projected to be completed in five years but he has advocated a three and a half years completion. The metro will also present an easy passage of transit between the two airports once it becomes operational and this will be beneficial to the transit flyers, airline crew, cargo operators and the transit flyers making journeys outstation using major railway terminals like Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

At the present the journey between the two airports by road between the two airports takes between 70 and 90 minutes depending on the traffic conditions. The new metro line is seen to cut down the traveling time dramatically and will offer a good and solid high-speed connection to both passengers and staff working at the airport.
