Pakistan boycotting the upcoming T20 world cup is an option, but the Pakistani Cricket Board (PCB) is still awaiting a final government directive, which would be communicated by Monday. Nevertheless, recent events have shown that not only a total withdrawal of the tournament is highly unthinkable, but also a partial boycott, i.e., the withdrawal out of the high-profile group match against India on February 15, is becoming less and less possible.

Sources point out that in case Pakistan ends up taking part in the tournament, it was even contemplated that they would miss out on the big match with India as a gesture of unity with Bangladesh. Other symbolic actions that were suggested also saw players clad in black armbands all through the tournament and also dedicating any tournament victory to Bangladeshi supporters of the cricket sport. Irrespective of these deliberations, the involved financial and legal risks have considerably limited the choices that the PCB has.

Pakistan media coverage on Monday reported that total boycott would definitely carry dire consequences of the International Cricket Council (ICC), such as fines and future ban. In the meantime, losing only the India game would put the PCB at risk of a possible lawsuit that would cost the host broadcasters an approximate of 38 million dollars. The report observed that the India pakistan match in itself generates huge income as a result of advertising space, sponsored programs and branded integrations, and it is a must have commercial on the tournament.

The report also indicated that to the broadcaster, almost $38 million is directly linked to this individual match which is indicative of the magnitude of the financial implications that PCB will have in case of withdrawal.

A meeting with the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was held on Monday by the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi where all the possible options were discussed. The ultimate decision on whether Pakistan can take part in the T20 world cup is likely to be decided either later this week or next week.
