The Padma Shri awards have been conferred upon a wide range of 45 persons spread all over India and commonly referred to as the unsung heroes in the country as appreciation of exceptional service in the fields of healthcare, culture, social welfare and environmental protection. The list commemorates common Indians whose silent effort has left an everlasting mark in society.
One of the awardees is a former bus conductor who proceeded to set up the largest free-access library in the world where knowledge is made available to thousands of people. The other honouree is a paediatrician based in Mumbai who established the first human milk bank in Asia, which is a groundbreaking and innovative move that has drastically contributed towards saving the lives of newborn babies. There is also a 90-year-old musician who still maintains the unique traditional instruments thus ensuring that indigenous music is still practiced.
Through an official statement, the government emphasized the broad scope of contribution by the recipients. These are doctors dealing with local health issues like haemophilia, a neonatologist to establish the first human milk bank in India, people maintaining the local culture and national integration in border states, and people supporting the promotion of tribal languages and martial arts practised in the past. Those receiving the awards also consist of craftsmen and weave holders with the disappearing crafts and those environmentalists protecting ecological wealth and social workers promoting cleanliness and community welfare.
Famous examples are an 88-year-old former Chandigarh IPS officer, who is famed to have personally headed the cleaning up of the streets; Armida Fernandes, a paediatrician who has established the first human milk bank in Asia; an educator of war art (Bhagwandas Raikwar), a tribal Tarpa player (90-year-old Bhiklya Ladakya Dhinda) in Maharashtra and a leading social worker (Brij Lal Bhat) in Jammu and Kashmir.
These awardees collectively give the sense of service, commitment, and humility, which are expressions of ordinary citizens who silently strive to improve the nation.
