On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the National Voters Day by posting an open letter to the citizens offering an invitation to the citizens to motivate families, schools and communities to get more first time voters to vote in the Indian democratic process as well as ensuring that they turn up in large numbers. The Prime Minister, in this letter, wrote in retrospect of the Indian reliance on democracy and emphasized that the country has achieved 75 years of its first General Election which took place in 195152.

Terming voting as a privilege and a responsibility, PM Modi explained it as a religious constitutional right. According to him, the indelible ink print upon the finger of a voter is a badge of honour that makes democracy alive and meaningful. All votes, according to him, help in strengthening and stabilizing the country democratic roots.

Special attention was given to young citizens who are first-time voters by the Prime Minister. He encouraged families and schools to embrace them with their democratic process. According to Modi, schools and colleges can be also imperative as they become the centres of voter awareness and enrolment making sure that all young citizens who are eligible have registered. He further suggested that such initiatives are best organised in a day known as National Voters Day, which was on January 25.

Restating his message in Mann Ki Baat address, PM Modi referred to a voter as the soul of democracy. He even urged young people to enroll to vote as soon as they are 18 and persuaded families and neighbourhoods to congratulate first-time voters such as birthdays making voting a civic event to remember.
