Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran is said to have transferred to a fortified underground bunker in Tehran, according to two sources who are close to the Iranian government as reported by Iran International as tensions begin to rise between Iran and the United States. This action follows the evaluation of an increased risk of a possible US attack by the senior military and security officials. The shelter is said to be a vastly fortified complex that has extensive interconnected tunnels which were constructed to provide maximum protection to the inhabitants in the case of a military conflict.
The report also reported that Masoud Khamenei, the third son of the Supreme Leader has assumed daily control of the office of his father. It is reported that he is serving as the principal channel of communication between the Supreme Leader and the executive departments of Iran, where he is dealing with the communications and administration of this straint.
This is in light of the hint conveyed by the US President Donald Trump, who said that a US naval armada will arrive in the Middle East. Trump, talking on an Air Force One plane, said that the US was deploying war vessels near the area, just in case, he chooses to act against Iran. This declaration has raised the risks of an eventual military escalation to a great extent.
General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the ground forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran responded sternly to this. He stated that Iranian troops were more prepared than ever and that they had got their finger on the trigger to execute instructions of the Supreme Leader. One of the senior Iranian officials reported that any US attack would be treated as an all- out war and Iran would react in the worst manner possible.
With the two countries constantly throwing insults to each other, the case is very volatile such that prospects of a war that would bring about an imbalance in the entire Middle East region is a possibility. The international watch is on the situation, with calls to show restraint and engage in dialogue to identify a way out.
