An explosion at a freight corridor, some 10 kilometers off Sirhind in the Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab on Friday night has injured a railway employee and caused damage to railway infrastructure. On Saturday, officials said that a pro-Khalistan outfit has taken credit of the incident.
Police sources reported that the explosion destroyed an engine on a freight train and a section of a rail line in a newly completed section of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) at the Kahnpur railway crossing. A freight train was passing through the place of the explosion.
In an alleged statement by Ranjit Singh Jammu, the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KLF) said it carried out the blast. The group said that the act was done to commemorate the 40th-year anniversary of the declaration of Khalistan claiming that the Khalistan movement is alive and continuing.
One of the seniors in the Punjab police force who knew about the case told a reporter that the police officers in the area at once started their investigations and that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also taking part in the investigation. Soon after the explosion, all central security agencies were put on alert.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Ropar Range, Dr Nanak Singh confirmed that the railway safety officer of that area, Anil Sharma received minor injury in the blast and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was charged out later with medical treatment.
The police authorities said that by early in the morning on Saturday, the break in the railway track had been repaired and no further inconvenience was created on the freight services. The police have assured that the case is being investigated at a high rate and that the culprits will be charged and arrested with time.
