The absence of senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in major party meetings once again raised speculation on his poor relationship with the Congress leadership only this time with emphasis on his native state of Kerala where Assembly elections are about to take place. The four time MP has now expressed that he is unapologetic in his opinions on national security like his actions towards supporting the actions of the BJP led central government towards Pakistan and the execution of Operation Sindoor.

Tharoor has made it clear that he never crossed the line of the official positions of the Congress party in his speech in Parliament. He further explained that the only matter where he had aired a principled public divergence was Operation Sindoor, which was reported by PTI in Kozhikode and New Delhi. To him, his remarks were based on national interest, and were in line with his long held counter-terrorism perceptions.

His comments are several days following his absence of a key Congress meeting in New Delhi that was set to finalise the strategy of the party to use during the Kerala Assembly elections that are forthcoming. Although the Congress leadership has stuck to the argument that Tharoor could not be present because of other engagements in the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF), according to the sources cited by the PTI, the MP felt grossly insulted by an alleged snub by party leader Rahul Gandhi at a similar event in Kochi in the past.

In an interview at the literature festival in Kozhikode, with the occasion being held in relation to his book on social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, Tharoor chose not to mention any particular incidences when answering questions on whether he differed with the party. Nonetheless, he vehemently cleared his previous writings and speeches and reiterated his support of a kinetic response to the terror camps after Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir last year.

The episode has contributed to the current debate in political circles surrounding the relationship of Tharoor with the congress leadership in the run up to the important Kerala elections.
