An extreme weather condition known as a strong winter storm sweeping the United States has caused over 8000 flights planned to travel in the weekend to be cancelled causing a lot of havoc to air travel and the life people live on a daily basis. The storm, which is likely to affect vast areas of the country, is also becoming a source of concern on the issue of long power outages and perilous driving situations.

It is projected that almost 140 million people are put under winter storm warnings which extend to New Mexico to New England. The National Weather Service has warned that the system might cause heavy snowing across most of the region as well as a possible disaster band of ice stretching across the eastern part of Texas up to North Carolina. According to meteorologists, the damage in the areas of ice-hit may be equivalent to a hurricane, and trees, power lines, and other facilities are under threat.

Freezing rain and sleet had already started affecting some of Texas by Friday night and Oklahoma had reported snow and sleet. The storm is supposed to hit the southern states and head to the Northeast as the storm advances. According to the prognosis of weather officials, big cities such as Washington, D.C., to New York and Boston might get up to a foot (30 centimeters) of snow, which would additionally complicate any traveling and emergency response operations.

In over a dozen states, governors have declared emergencies or asked people to stay home and not make unnecessary trips. The government is telling its citizens to stock up and keep in case of long periods of power outages and to avoid the roads unless absolutely essential. The storm is still growing stronger and emergency crews are on high alert with officials battalion in all the affected areas keeping a close eye on situations.
