On Wednesday, the Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, wrote that the recent happenings in Iran could indicate a potential reduction in the tension, but warned that it is too early to draw any conclusions as far as the situation in the country is concerned because of a serious lack of information that is emerging due to a communications blockade.

Based on several reports by international bodies, Tharoor reported that Iranian officials had announced that they were halting the execution of more than 800 prisoners a move which the regime had been quoted saying earlier. He also quoted remarks of the US President Donald Trump, who stated that Washington was not timing a military action against Iran, at this stage, as a sign of a possible ceasefire in the escalation.

To some extent, these are encouraging signs that we might be witnessing a slowing down of tensions, Tharoor commented. He further added that those countries within the region of the Gulf were most likely profoundly worried about the repercussions of a larger regional conflict and were secretly urging towards de-escalation. The feeling that I presently have, in my gut, is that we have turned a corner, he said, but these conclusions must be drawn very carefully.

Tharoor had underscored that it is not possible to determine what is happening on the ground independently because Iran has virtually blocked its internet which has prevented forming a clear picture of the situation. He cautioned that the flow of information outside the country might be partial or slow and called on the observers to be careful in how they interpret them.

His comments are made as the anger of protest against the government in Iran seems to have subsided over the past couple of days, with no new images or direct accounts emerging. Started at the end of last year, the protests caught the attention of the whole world with concerns over the magnitude of the civil unrest and the intensity of the government reaction. Human rights organizations all around the world have alleged that thousands were murdered in the crackdown yet official numbers have been disputed.
