Following COVID-19, norovirus has now sparked public panic. More than 100 students at a senior high school in Foshan City, located in southern China’s Guangdong Province, have been infected. According to the health department, a total of 103 students have tested positive.
Local officials said that, fortunately, all the infected students are in good health. None of the students have experienced serious complications, and no deaths have been reported. As a precaution, the school campus has been thoroughly sanitized, and the students’ health is being monitored regularly.
The infected students have reported stomach problems, including vomiting and diarrhea, which are common symptoms of norovirus. All students are receiving appropriate treatment and are under medical supervision. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the virus.
According to the Guangdong Province Disease Control Department, norovirus cases in the region typically peak between October and March each year. The virus spreads rapidly during the cold season, and the risk is particularly high in schools, dormitories, and crowded places.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes a stomach infection. It’s also commonly known as stomach flu, although it’s not directly related to the flu. Infection with this virus causes sudden vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weakness. It can spread rapidly from person to person, especially through contact with contaminated food, water, or surfaces.
Every year, millions of people worldwide are affected by norovirus. Statistics indicate that more than 680 million people are affected annually. This includes approximately 200 million children under the age of 5. The virus also kills approximately 200,000 people each year, including approximately 50,000 children. Its greatest impact is felt in poor and developing countries, where medical facilities are limited.
This virus also causes significant economic damage to the world. The combined economic impact from medical treatment and lost work is estimated at approximately $60 billion annually. In the United States, it is considered the leading cause of foodborne illness.
