X was down for tens of thousands of users worldwide on Friday (January 16, 2026), according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
There were more than 62,000 reports of issues with the social media platform as of 10:22 a.m. ET in the United States, according to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources.
Users in the UK reported around 11,000 incidents and over 3,000 issues were reported in India.
Reacting to the sudden outage, one person wrote in the Downdetector comment section: “is the website going veryyy slow for anyone else or is it just my poor connection?”
“𝕏 is down. What is the cause? It was working until 15 minutes ago. Let’s hope it’s not another cyberattack. Quite unusual. How is it on your end? I tried both mobile and web and both have issues,” another person commented.
So far, the tycoon has not commented on either this fall or the one that occurred last Tuesday, January 13, fueling doubts about the proper functioning of X since the American acquired it. All this in the midst of the controversy over the unauthorized nudity that was being carried out by X’s AI, Grok.
