The Special Investigation Team (SIT) report has shown that there was a grave conspiracy to wrongly implicate forged implication of a 2016 case filed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and was registered at Thane Nagar Police Station. It is also suggested in the report that criminal charges be brought against the ex former Director General of Police, Sanjay Pandey, the ex deputy commissioner, Laxmikant Patil, and the assistant commissioner, Sardar Patil, who are accused of plotting to set up the leaders on a false case. Former DGP Rashmi Shukla only five days before retiring submitted SIT report to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home).
The SIT results also indicated that there were efforts to frame Fadnavis even in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, especially when Sanjay Pandey became the Mumbai Police Commissioner and later the Director General of Police. The report proposes that the attempts were of larger scale to politically attack the existing state leadership by discrediting them and diminishing their position in the society. The case has received a new publicity as the local elections approach, and it has raised tensions in the Maharashtra political debate.
In these developments, the state of Maharashtra is on the verge of polling in 29 municipal corporation elections in the state including major cities like Mumbai, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad to be held January 15, and counting to be done January 16. With the elections just starting, both Shiv Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shindi were campaigning at Pune, claiming that the campaign Mahayuti group is running on an agenda devoted to development. He felt confident that the alliance would win on both Mumbai and Pune municipal corporations, and made governance, civic enhancement and development of infrastructures as the major pillars of their campaign.
These SIT report revelations, along with the upcoming municipal elections, are sure to define political discourses in Maharashtra in the coming weeks, with a fresh take on accountability, governance.
