In the state of Tamil Nadu, the first round of seat sharing negotiations took place on Tuesday by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which is the beginning of strategic planning of the realization of the coming 2026 Assembly elections. The gathering was characterized by the visit of Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal who made his debut visit in Chennai since he was made the election-in-charge of the state by the NDA.

In the discussions, the E. Palaniswami (EPS) General Secretary of AIADMK was concerned with how to go about defeating the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. Although the negotiation process took approximately an hour at a secret hotel, no one showed the number of seats that were being negotiated. The sources indicate that the two sides shared lists of the constituencies they would like to fight, which is an indication of a collaborative and competitive manner of sharing seats.

With Goyal were five senior BJP leaders including the Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran, Union Ministers of state, Arjun Ram Meghwal and L. Murugan, National Secretary Arvind Menon and Sudhakar Reddy, the national co-incharge of Tamil Nadu in the NDA. EPS headed the discussions at the AIADMK camp, and was accompanied by other important aides including S.P. Velumani, K.P. Munusamy and P. Thangamani.

This has been reported to be suggested by AIADMK, who has offered a little more seats to the BJP than it was arranged before, though the party anticipates greater compromises in the later rounds. This initial negotiation exercise is a measure of a nervous and yet a calculative attempt by the NDA to unify their forces against DMK and to show some sort of collective face to the political relevant Tamil Nadu.

The future seat-sharing decisions should be instrumental in determining the electoral strategy of the NDA in the state and act as an indicator of the allocation of the alliance further in other southern states before the 2026 elections.
