The just-concluded Winter Session of Parliament was mainly characterized by intense debates and antagonisms between the government and the Opposition on most issues of concern but in a very cordial tone, on Friday, the MPs of both sides brimmed with each other as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha hosted the traditional tea meeting. The informal meeting provided the parliamentarians with a unique chance to socialize in a casual environment, where the atmosphere of camaraderie was promoted despite the tense atmosphere in the legislative process.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress parliamentary representative Priyanka Gandhi were caught engaging in a friendly chat which underscored the lighter aspect of parliamentary relations. Gandhi, the representative of Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Kerala, is reported to have told PM Modi that she is now learning Malayalam to communicate better with her constituents. This human touch emphasized the interest of the MP to reach the people she represents and even made people smile.

The recent diplomatic visit of PM Modi to Africa and the Middle East was also mentioned in the discussion. Gandhi Priyanka questioned the Prime Minister on his visit and he informed that Ethiopia, especially, is doing extremely well socially and economically and this is contrary to expectation in India. His remarks gave an overview of how the Prime Minister was involved in international affairs and what good things he witnessed on his visit.

Humour was also a lightening element in the tea meeting. In commenting on the shortness of the Winter Session, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, Dharmendra Yadav stated that it was one of the shortest parliamentary sessions. PM Modi responded by saying that it was good their meeting was short since he was not required to stand up and speak for many days, and left the MPs in laughter.

On the whole, the incident was indicative of political cordiality in the midst of the political discussions, which offered the cross-party consultation.
