Mayawati, the chief and the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, on Friday also entered the Bihar naqab issue, terming the incident as sad and unfortunate and requesting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to apologize and take action to put an end to the political row that was growing. She wrote in a detailed post in Hindi on X that the problem had aggravated after later utterances by ministers rather than it being addressed right away.
The scandal is based on a case that took place at the Chief Minister Secretariat in Patna on Monday where Ayush doctors had been summoned to collect their appointment letters. One of the most popular videos is when a woman went up to the stage in a naqab and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar commented about her dress and took off her veil. The video caused great emotions among the opposition parties, who insisted on the chief minister to apologize without conditionalities.
Mayawati emphasized that the issue was directly related to the safety, dignity and self esteem of women and it was to be treated with sensitivity. She claimed that the situation would have been diffused by an immediate action of the chief minister. She added that it would be best that the chief minister sees the incident in the right perspective, apologizes and makes an effort to end this ever-increasing bitterness.
Another controversy that raised concern by the BSP leader occurred in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, where police officers were involved in a separate scandal when they were criticised in allegedly disrespecting the accepted norms of saluting a religious preacher in one of the police parades. Mayawati (described the incident as being harmful to the profession and holiness of the police traditions) claimed that it had put the state government in the spotlight. She, though, credited it to be a good move that the Director General of Police in the state had requested the district police chief to explain why, and said that the people had been awaiting actual action.
