Friday, the Union Home Ministry released a notification to change the Border Security Force (BSF) Rules to provide the ex-Agniveer a considerable boost in the reservation in constable recruitment in comparison with the initially suggested 10 percent to 50 percent position to a huge 50 percent reservation. The relocation is expected to offer more post-service jobs to staff who have been inducted through the Agnipath scheme.

According to the amended rules, the post of constable recruitment will be done in two phases. During the initial stage, the relevant Nodal Force will perform the recruitment of half the number of vacancies that will be exclusively open to ex-Agniveer. In the second step, Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will carry out a process of recruiting other than ex-Agniveers in the remaining 47 percent of the posts. This number takes into consideration the present 10% quota of ex-servicemen, as well as any vacancies of ex-Agniveir in the initial phase.

The announcement further explains that the Director General of the BSF will decide the vacancies to be filled by women candidates on an annual basis depending on probabilities of functions and operations.

In the past, 10 percent of the constable (general duty) vacancies in all the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) were reserved to ex-Agniveers. The most recent amendment is however only applied to the BSF and not to other CAPFs currently.

Ex-Agniveiers under the current provisions will not have to pass the physical efficiency test yet he/she will have to pass the written test.

The BSF and the Indian Army have very close coordination in the international border and on the Line of Control. BSF units were also engaged in fighting conditions with the Army personnel in Operation Sindoor in Jammu and Kashmir.

On June 14, 2022, India launched the Agnipath scheme, which allows recruiting short-term soldiers into the Army, Navy and Air Force. The policy will involve the maintenance of a young average age of the armed forces, fitness, and the construction of a technologically skilled military force that will be ready to face war in the future.
