Bangladesh has been driven to the edge when violent demonstrations in just a few cities ensued after one of the youth leaders, Sharif Osman Hadi also died due to the injuries he sustained in an assassination attempt last week. The turmoil is untimely to the nation that will be going to national elections in February 2026.
Hadi, who is also a spokesperson of the Inquilab Mancha, a socio-cultural group established in the wake of the July 2024 uprising, was an up-and-coming politician and an announced contender to the next general elections. Last Friday, the 32-year man was attacked in Dhaka by masked attackers as he was about to launch his election campaign.
Reportedly, in the news agency, the attack occurred in the Bijoynagar neighbourhood, where a gunman, who was riding the pillion of a passing motorbike, fired at Hadi as he rode in a rickshaw. He got severe head injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. His condition was so serious that Hadi was subsequently airlifted to Singapore where he was under advanced treatment in a life support machine of six days before being pronounced dead later on Thursday.
Hadi had a leading role in the 2024 revolution which saw the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina ousted and who sought refuge in India and is still in self-imposed exile. Hadi was famous due to his aggressive opposition towards India and had indicated his intentions to run as an independent candidate in the parliamentary elections in the Dhaka-8 constituency.
His death caused massive protests that were characterized by anger, grief, and vandalism. Protesters were observed with uplifting emotionally-charged slogans in the name of Hadi and the promise that they would not end the movement that he symbolized and they wanted the murderer of Hadi to face instant justice. Some areas were reported to target media offices and damage public properties.
In a bid to control the situation, the governments have stationed more police and paramilitary troops in the sensitive areas.
