Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday severely condemned the BJP which supported Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following the damage of niqab by a Muslim woman in a viral video at an official function. In response to the defence made by Union minister and BJP MP Giriraj Singh in defence of the Bihar CM, Abdullah anticipated no better response to the ruling party.
Addressing the media House Abdullah raised the question of the selective outrage of the BJP and said that the reaction would have been completely different had an incident taken place against a Hindu woman. Had it been a Hindu woman of Rajasthan or Haryana wearing a ghunghat and had taken it off, BJP would have raised a great hue and cry. Suppose a Muslim leader had taken off the veil of a Hindu woman. However, since this was a Muslim woman, the position of BJP is totally opposite, he said.
The scandal arose when a video taken on social media was shared widely that Nitish Kumar dragged the niqab of a Muslim woman doctor during the delivery of appointment letters to newly hired AYUSH doctors in Bihar. The incident elicited intense criticism in different quarters with many referring to it as disrespectful and embarrassing.
In spite of the controversy, BJP MP Giriraj Singh came to the defense of Nitish Kumar saying that it was not proper to accept official documents wearing a hijab or veil. Singh claimed that the same can be applied to other locations such as airports and criticized opponents who tried to make the matter a religious one.
However, Omar Abdullah was highly criticical of the statements made by Singh and declared what happened to be very revealing of the true nature of Nitish Kumar. In case the chief minister felt uneasy in giving out the appointment letter, he is just supposed to have overlooked her.
