On Thursday, Congress legislator Pradnya Satav resigned the Maharashtra Legislative Council and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Nariman Point office of the party in Mumbai and this signifies a major political change in favour of the local body election in the state.
Satav, 49, was elected to the Legislative Council on a Congress ticket in 2021 after her husband, senior Congress leader and Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha, Rajeev Satav, had passed away. In 2024, she was again elected to the Upper House but the term was to last until July 2030. Her choice of quitting in between her term and changing parties is being regarded as the blowback to the Congress especially in the Marathwada region.
Satav is a member of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community and is the representative of Hingoli district in the Marathwada region where the Satav family has long been a political force. Rajeev Satav was considered to be one of the central Congress leaders, and he was a known close associate of Rahul Gandhi, who is alleged to be a member of his close inner circle. That was his political legacy that assisted Pradnya Satav in cementing her place in the party in the last several years.
Prior to her admission to the BJP, Satav wrote to the Congress giving up the primary membership and later wrote to the legislature secretariat giving up her resignation as an MLC. She was initiated into the BJP in the company of state president of the BJP, Ravindra Chavan, and Maharashtra revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
In her speech, Satav claimed that she was acting because there was a need to make sure that her constituency was developed and also because of what her supporters wanted. She complimented the BJP government in state government and said Maharashtra was experiencing a fast growth under the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. My employees were very keen on the fact that we had to be on the same side with the BJP so as to support and gain through this development agenda, she said.
