The supposed role of a man with Hyderabadi origin on the recent mass shooting in the Bondi Beach of Australia that killed 15 people has been met with strong Indian reaction with Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao terming it as an insult to India and a major national security issue. In his speech on Wednesday, Rao described the news that connected the Hyderabad to the terror attack as highly disturbing and something that needed to be examined by the Indian authorities in detail.
Rao argues that the circumstances in which the accused left India and his background details should be investigated immediately by the Telangana police. He emphasized that such incidences not only tarnish the image of India in the international system, but also rejoice about the lack of internal security. He was quoted saying that the connection of the terror act of Hyderabad is a shame to us, as well as a grave issue of national security.
The prime suspect was a 50-year old Sajid Akram who was shot dead in a crossfire with the Australian police after he allegedly started shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah party in Sydney on Sunday. His son, Naveed Akram, aged 24, played another role in the attack and is already hospitalised, being under the police custody. There are reports that the two were armed with rifles when they were shooting. The Bureau of Immigration of Philippines reported that Sajid Akaram was carrying an Indian passport during the attack.
Telangana police had previously attested that Sajid was a native of Hyderabad, who had migrated to Australia in the year 1998. Rao, however, opined that although the family had left India several decades ago, the case indicates that there is a worrying tendency. He demanded a thorough investigation on the history and potential radical influences of the family.
In another apprehension, Rao asserted that there still might be sleeper cells in Hyderabad that are in connection with the terror organizations like the ISI and the ISIS.
