Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is under attack on part of the opposition parties on account of a video he was caught on camera pulling the niqab of a Muslim woman off her face in the middle of a social gathering. The incident happened when the woman, who was an AYUSH doctor, was being offered an appointment letter. The footage that has not been independently verified as authentic spread rapidly on social media and was shared widely by the official X handles of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee.
The opposition has termed the act as shameful and has doubted the psychological condition of the Chief Minister. RJD said he pitied Nitish Kumar regarding his mental state, whether he had sunk to a state of utter pitiable or whether he had completely attained the RSS-BJP ideology. The party attacked the CM over what it termed was an unbecoming behavior of a state leader and it raised doubts on whether women were safe in Bihar under his leadership.
Bihar congress had gone a step more and demanded that Kumar should resign immediately. The state unit of the party criticized the act as very reprehensible and pointed out that when the head of the state himself publicly embarrasses a woman it calls into serious question how women in the state are safe. They further explained that although some media articles mentioned the act as pulling a hijab, it is evident in the video that Kumar pulled the niqab, a veil that covers the face which is usually worn together with a hijab.
The incidence has elicited a very hot debate on both the political and social media platforms with the incidence being condemned by many users who have questioned the ethical and moral behaviour of the Chief Minister. The RJD and the Congress have also demanded stringent responsibility claiming that accountability should be maintained by the people in power to the citizens, particularly the women.
