Indian sports saw a remarkable return on Friday when Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat reversed her decision to retire. She announced her return to mat to fight for the elusive medal at LA Olympics, an event that is upcoming in 2028.
Vinesh had announced her retirement after a heart-wrenching disqualification from a bout at Paris Olympics. She joined politics after that. However, in a recent tweet on X, she mentioned how people kept asking if Paris was the end. She said that she stepped away from the mat, its pressure, and expectations to take a breath of relief. After taking a break, she has now realised that it is not possible to keep herself away from the mat. “No matter how far I walked away, a part of me stayed on the mat”, read an excerpt from her tweet.
“So here I am, stepping back toward LA28 with a heart that’s unafraid and a spirit that refuses to bow….. And this time, I’m not walking alone my son is joining my team, my biggest motivation, my little cheerleader on this road to the LA Olympics.”, wrote Vinesh Phogat in her post.
Her disqualification atthe Paris 2024 Olympics came as a disappointment for Indians, yet a proud moment as she became the first woman wrestler to reach the Olympics after defeating Japan’s four-time world champion Yui Susaki. Her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was later made, seeking reinstatement and a joint silver medal. However, this plea was dismissed by the court.
