Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers have held an important meeting on Sunday in Delhi, as political insecurity and ethnic unrest continue in the state. The meeting is timed as Manipur is still under the President Rule after the government of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh was dismissed in February. The BJP that has been in power in the state prior to the central rule is said to be talking about an issue concerning the government formation though no official agenda has been made available to the lawmakers.
N Biren Singh, the former Chief Minister, said that BJP legislators in all the states of Manipur had been invited to the meeting. It can be in the formation of government. Most of us are going,” he said. According to the sources of the party, the northeast coordinator of the BJP, Sambit Patra himself, made numerous calls to the lawmakers to make sure they turn up. BJP president in the state, A Sharda Devi has been also contacting the lawmakers and could personally visit the meeting.
BJP has invited every legislator, including Kuki-Zo. The Kuki-Zo legislators in the BJP consisting of seven members have been insisting on a separate administration before any other new government is constituted, which is a continuation of communal tensions and complicated political forces in the state.
Since May 2023, ethnic violence has been widespread in Manipar, mostly between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The conflicts have claimed the lives of at least 260 people and displaced at least 60,000. Though thousands of security officers are being deployed, there are still incidences of violence and the communities are more or less divided in terms of ethnicity.
The Delhi party meeting is parallel with the two day high-profile visit of the President Droupadi Murmu to Manipur, the second high-profile visit in the aftermath of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September.
