Today is an important day for India and Russia. Around 25 agreements are likely to be signed between the two countries. Putin’s program today will begin with a state welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 11 am. After this, he will go to Rajghat and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. After 12 noon, the 23rd India-Russia annual summit will be held at Hyderabad House. PM Modi also presented a copy of Shri Bhagwad Gita to the Russian President.
Earlier, on Thursday evening, President Putin arrived in Delhi around 7 pm. Prime Minister Modi personally went to Palam Airport to receive him. Breaking protocol, he hosted his presidential friend. PM Modi gave Putin a grand welcome at the airport. The two leaders then traveled together in the same car to the Prime Minister’s residence (7, Lok Kalyan Marg). PM Modi hosted an informal dinner in honor of his friend.
Today’s meeting between PM Modi and Putin is significant in many ways, as it is expected to discuss increasing oil supplies, exploring new options for cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, and defense deals such as the S-400 air defense system and Su-57 fighter jets. Putin’s visit underscores the strength and continued importance of the India-Russia strategic partnership in the changing geopolitical environment. A deal for small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) with Russia’s Rosatom is also expected to be finalized today.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will be given a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning. This is the highest formal honor accorded to any foreign head of state in India. A ceremonial welcome is only given to leaders who visit India on a state visit. This honor is only given to heads of state from countries where the President is the head of state. In India, President Draupadi Murmu is the head of state, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the head of government. Foreign heads of state are welcomed at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan with a guard of honor, the national anthem, and a military salute. Not all leaders receive this honor—the visit must be a state one.
