On Thursday, BJP legislators took a walk out of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly over the alleged lathi charge on the ABVP workers outside the Zorawar Stadium in the town of Dharamshala. This protest was called after a hot-tempered debate of the session, in which Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur mentioned a point of order right after the question hour.

Thakur claimed that the Dharamshala SDM had given Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) the permission to organize a protest march to Zorawar Stadium. Regardless of this authorization, he claimed that police used baton charging towards the demonstrators. He also accused Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu of misleading the House because earlier on he had said that ABVP had not been allowed to hold the march.

On Wednesday, the protest was violent as ABVP activists came out in huge numbers to gherao the Vidhan Sabha and force their demands. Police and protesters engaged in a tussle at the Zorawar ground and several people were injured. The ABVP activists alleged that female activists had been kicked by male police officers. They insisted on a no tolerance policy and wanted the SHO of Dharamshala suspended, saying he had arrested activists in a community hall, and purported to threaten them and assault them.

In his address to the Assembly, Chief Minister Sukhu claimed that one male and three female police constables had been injured and six members of the ABVP had suffered injuries during the agitation. He has also contributed that the ABVP activists had misbehaved with a female police constable and that the government was not taking that lightly.

Another incident that was brought to the fore by Jai Ram Thakur involved the Youth Congress workers who were reported to have burnt and kicked a effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi outside the Raj Bhavan earlier in November. He asked why the leaders had not done anything against the perpetrators.

After these observations, Thakur said that BJP legislative party would walk out of the Assembly protesting against the lathi charge.
