Star India batter Virat Kohli has overtaken a fellow teammate Shubman Gill in the recent ICC ODI Rankings, which was released on Wednesday, after his match-winning century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, which was sensational. Kohli surged but India captain Rohit Sharma had no trouble in maintaining a lead and was topping the rankings with a further margin to New Zealand captain Daryl Mitchell.
Kohli, who has had an excellent one-day performance all year round, made a terrific 135 out of 120 balls in Ranchi, spearheading the 17-run India win. It was also his 52 nd ODI century and his 3 rd in the place with his knock, which was characterized by a perfect timing and a traditional strokeplay. In the innings, he has also joined a pivotal 136-run partnership with Rohit Sharma, who also played his role with a useful 57, to see India set a huge target of 350.
This performance moved Kohli to number four in the league with 751 rating points and surpassing Gill, who did not participate in the series because of an injury on his neck at the Kolkata Test. Kohli has been gaining ground significantly on Rohit and is now within striking distance of reclaiming the world No. 1 ODI batter position, which he had held in excess of three years before being surpassed by Babar Azam of Pakistan in April 2021. There are still more games in the South Africa series and the gap can be further decreased by Kohli.
Kuldeep Yadav is another bowler who saw a tremendous increase as he rose to the sixth position following his excellent performance of four wickets that stalled the aggressive South African pursuit in Ranchi. He also has 641 rating points and as such, he has overtaken Mitchell Santner of New Zealand to become the highest rated ODI bowler in India.
Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy still command top spots in T20I rankings. Abhishek is the highest rated batter with 920 rating points and Chakravarthy is also a good bowler with a rating of 780 points.
