Russian President Vladimir Putin will come to New Delhi on Thursday, December 4, prior to the annual India-Russia summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, December 5. It is Putin’s first visit to India since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and is highly observed to have geopolitical implications.
The three-day summit (usually annually prior to the Ukrainian war) is likely to span an extensive scope of concerns such as defence cooperation, strategic trade mechanisms, and energy partnerships. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, said that Russia would use this visit to make sure that bilateral trade with India is not subject to the sanctions that the United States has imposed during the rule of President Donald Trump. As Washington is urging New Delhi to cut the reliance on Russian power and weaponry, trade protection has come to play a central role in Moscow.
One of the key events that were preceding the summit is the passing of an important defence agreement by the State Duma in Russia. Ratification of the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistic Support (RELOS) agreement, which was signed in February, by the lower house of parliament has occurred. Vyacheslav Volodin, who is a speaker, termed the move as an essential move towards enhancing long term strategic relationship between two countries.
Other than defence, the two parties will also negotiate the growing interest of nuclear energy by India, with Russia proposing small modular nuclear reactor. The growth of trade will also be on the list. Recently, India and the Eurasian Economic Union, a five-member economic bloc, led by Russia, started negotiations on a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The FTA will expedite tariff and non-tariff barriers and access to markets by Indian exporters.
Besides, India and Russia have also signed a pact which allows workers, both skilled and semi-skilled workers to move, which will further enhance economic collaboration.
