Former MLA RV Devaraj, who was the leader of the Congress, died in Mysuru, party sources revealed on Tuesday. On Monday night, the 67-year-old leader had a sudden heart attack which caused his death. His death has caused a shock and grief in the Congress party and the political circles in Karnataka.

Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah lamented on the death of the senior leader. In one of the posts on X he characterized Devaraj as an active Congress worker and a person who maintained ideological principles during his political career. Devaraj was a hard working member of the Congress who had served many years as an ideologically committed and dedicated member of the Congress with a care of the people. Many more years should have passed and he should have been with us, the Chief Minister wrote. He also asked God to peace the deceased soul and power the family who lost one of their members.

The news was also eulogized by the Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar who described the news as very saddening. He brought into focus the decades of contributions of Devaraj to the Chickpet constituency as well his organisational strengths of the party. His political and social service to the Chickpet constituency cannot be measured, according to Shivakumar, who said his death is a huge loss to the political environment of the state. Even he had a prayer regarding the soul of Devaraj, and expressing his condolences to his family and followers.

RV Devaraj had a long time political career. He was an MLA three times having been first elected on a Congress ticket on the Chamarajpet constituency in 1989 and reelected in 1999. He showed loyalty and respect to party leadership in the year 2004, voluntarily giving way to the then Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna in the seat he was sitting in.

In 2013, Devaraj returned to the legislature successfully in the Chickpet constituency, after Assembly constituencies had been delimited.
