Delhi: The Delhi High Court has thrown out the petitions submitted by top Indian wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Satyawart Kadian that wanted to contest the elections held by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in December 2023. According to the court, the petitioners had on several occasions missed appearances in hearings, which finally made their non-prosecution petitions to be dismissed.

Justice Mini Pushkarna heard the case and on November 27, he noted that no petitioners or their representatives were present when the case was brought up. The order also pointed out the fact that the wrestlers had also not shown up on two occasions earlier too. Seeing the tendency of lack of appearance, the court commented that the petitioners do not appear to be concerned with pursuing the current affairs, and ordered the dismissal of the petitions.

The four wrestlers had taken their case to the High Court complaining that the WFI elections were marred by flaws and were not done in a transparent manner. Their petition alleged the federation of the procedural lapses and alleged that the electoral process was not fairly done. These claims were made against a contentious presidential race in which Sanjay Singh was the winner defeating Anita Sheoran who was the nominee of the protesting Olympians.

The wrestlers complained that the manner in which the elections were conducted failed to uphold the principles of fairness as demanded by a national sporting body and wanted the court to audit and probably reverse the outcome. They emphasized that the right procedures were not taken and their concerns were overlooked.

Nonetheless, as the petitioners failed to show up in the court regularly and demonstrate any activity in the progress of their case, the High Court decided that they had nothing to resume the case.
