Pune: The Pune District Authority has declared postponement of elections of Baramati and five other municipal councils following the inability to conduct the elections as scheduled after the court decisions were delayed making it not feasible. The decision is based upon stringent rules of the State Election Commission (SEC) that had in the previous past directed that no elections should take place in any of the municipal councils or nagar panchayats where membership disqualification appeals or reservation disputes were still awaiting in the district courts.
Clearly, SEC had set that as of November 22, 2025, all such court decisions had to be made, otherwise the elections could not take place as scheduled. In the instance of the Baramati Municipal Council and the Fursungi-Uroli Devachi Municipal Council however, significant calls over the posts of the President were only made on November 26, 2025, four days after the due cut off date. Also, new orders were made after November 22 on member seats in the two councils making the process of electing another problem.
The SEC ordered all the general elections in both councils, the election of both President and members, to be deferred as a result of these delays. Election to such bodies has been postponed to December 20, 2025.
The same was witnessed in the Talegaon Dabhade, Lonavala, Daund and Saswad municipal councils where the court ruling on the dispute over seats of the members was also provided after the SEC deadline. This has also led to postponement of elections to the affected wards in these councils.
The district administration pointed out that no new nominations would be received. The nominations can merely be withdrawn, and the last day of withdrawal is December 10, 2025, at 3.00 PM.
The SEC is shortly going to issue an updated election programme in the newspapers and the revised schedule will be circulated at the local level to make sure that the voters and the candidates are thoroughly informed.
