India has taken the recent contacts between military officials from Bangladesh and Pakistan as a serious strategic signal. In light of this, the Army has taken major steps to strengthen the security of the Siliguri Corridor, the country’s northeastern lifeline. According to intelligence sources, three new military stations or garrisons have been established in areas bordering Bangladesh.
These new military bases have been established in Bamuni in Assam, Kishanganj in Bihar, and Chopra in West Bengal. These locations were selected considering the extremely sensitive geographical nature of the Siliguri Corridor. These garrisons will provide the Army and BSF with a fast and flexible strategic capability in case of a crisis.
These three new military bases provide security coverage for the entire Siliguri Corridor. The Chopra Military Station in West Bengal is located less than a kilometer from the Bangladesh border. These bases enable surveillance deep into Bangladesh, allowing Indian forces to be ready to respond within minutes in case of any threat. India has deployed Rafale fighter jets, BrahMos missiles, and state-of-the-art air defense systems like the S-400 along its eastern border.
Siliguri Corridor: Kishanganj’s new strategic role
The Siliguri Corridor is known as the “Chicken Neck” due to its narrow width. In some parts, it is only 22 kilometers wide. This corridor is the only link connecting the eight northeastern states to the Indian mainland. Any disruption here could isolate all eight northeastern states from the country’s mainland. This would severely impact the military supply chain and could disrupt trade worth billions of rupees. A senior army officer says that this is not India’s weakness but its strength, as our troops are deployed on three sides.
