With Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer unavailable following injuries, KL Rahul has been charged with the job of leading India in the upcoming three-match series of ODI against South Africa, beginning November 30 in Ranchi. This is a complete but surprising twist in the series as Rahul was not originally part of the leadership strategy. Gill and Shreyas were scheduled to be the captain and vice-captain of the last ODIs against Australia and due to unexpected injuries, the selectors were compelled to re-assess their decisions.
Shreyas Iyer was injured in the second ODI against Australia with a life threatening injury, whereas Shubman Gill was injured in the neck during the first Test of the series against South Africa at Kolkata. Such disappointments cleared the way of Rahul who has experience in holding the same captaincy position. He is a former captain of India in 12 ODs in which he has steered India to eight victories.
In an interview with reporters before the first match, Rahul confessed that he was told within a day before the squad announcement that he would be questioned to be the leader. I was informed only a day before, that there could be an opportunity. I have been captain of the side before, and it is something that makes me excited, he said. Rahul further said that he would be happy to bear the burden and work on doing right things to the team and not to bother with the burden of leadership.
He also recognized the good leadership team he has around him referring to senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Everyone considers itself a leader. It is a team effort whether I am a captain or not. There is a larger objective that we all work and I am targeting bigger objectives of the ODI team and Indian cricket, said Rahul.
In the future, Rahul emphasized the need to forget about the recent 0-2 series loss that India experienced at the hands of South Africa in the recent Test.
