On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually opened a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) plant of LEAP engines of Safran in Hyderabad, which is a big step to the growth of the fast growing aviation industry in India. The Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) division will specialize in the servicing of LEAP engines that supply power to some of the most popular commercial aircrafts like Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX.
The state of the art plant with an original investment of 1,300 crore is set to be ready in 2026. It is a significant initiative to increase domestic strengths in India in terms of aircraft engine maintenance which is a sector that is dominated by international firms at the moment. CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace, is a manufacturer of LEAP engines, which are reputed because of their fuel efficiency and enhanced technology.
The civil aviation market of India is considered to be one of the fastest-growing markets in the world, the domestic airlines have placed orders on over 1500 new aircrafts to keep abreast with the increase in passenger demand. Setting up of such a massive MRO facility is consistent with the vision of the government to free itself of external servicing centers and to popularize India as a destination of worldwide aviation servicing.
In a report by the Prime Minister Office, the SAESI plant will have a capacity of up to 300 LEAP engine overhauls in a year when it reaches full capacity by 2035. It will generate jobs and skill training within the local area because the center will hire more than 1,000 qualified Indian technicians and engineers.
The opening of this plant highlights how much confidence the world aerospace leaders have towards the technical knowhow of India. It also shows the larger interest of the Prime Minister Modi to have large value manufacturing and engineering investments in the country. India makes another decisive move of becoming a world leader in the aviation maintenance and engineering excellence with Safran latest project.
