An extreme depression that is above the Strait of Malacca intensified to Cyclonic Storm Senyar on Wednesday and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the structure is bound to landfall along the Indonesian coast later afternoon. The sudden strengthening was a result of the weather system still heading towards the west at a speed of almost 10kmph in the course of the last few hours.

The IMD posted an update in which it said, The deep depression near the Strait of Malacca shifted nearly westwards in the course of the last six hours with a speed of 10kmph and further intensified into Cyclonic Storm Senyar and was centred at 0530 hours IST in the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining Northeast Indonesia. The Strait of Malacca is a significant sea route connecting the Andaman Sea of northeastern Indian Ocean and the South China Sea of western Pacific thereby the region being meteorologically important.

The last bulletin provided by the IMD states that Cyclone Senyar will not decrease its strength within the upcoming 24 hours. It is estimated that the storm will proceed onto the westwards and hit the Indonesia coast on Wednesday afternoon. The forecasts used after landfall show that the system will move on a west-south westward path and then turn and move eastwards in the next 48 hours, thus a wavering yet closely followed path.

At the same time, the IMD also announced that another weather system was formed in the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. A low-pressure area in the area, which expands to other adjacent areas in south Sri Lanka, has intensified to become a well marked low pressurized area. It is likely that this system will intensify and it can turn into a depression in the next few days.

Having two active systems growing together, the meteorologists are closely monitoring the possible impacts particularly on coastal areas and shipping routes.
