On Tuesday, which was the first day of the winter session, an adjournment motion introduced by the opposition in the Assam Assembly to debate the death of a popular singer Zubeen Garg was passed. The freedom to discuss was granted when the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself asked the Speaker to give the floor to the debate, which indicated that the government is ready to take the issue seriously.

The session started with obituary notice, and then Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi stood up and demanded their adjournment motions over the death of Garg. The Chief Minister came in at a time when Speaker Biswajit Daimary was about to allow them to justify the admissibility of the motion.

According to CM Sarma, the government was also concerned with the events that surrounded the death of Zubeen Garg and asked the Speaker to permit the House to discuss the motion. He pointed out that despite the discussion, a number of bills important and additional grants that had been set to be discussed that day were urgent and had to be introduced. Sarma also made it clear that the ruling party members would not take part in the debate and the government position can only be presented in terms of a formal reply.

At the request of the Chief Minister, the Speaker granted the adjournment motion and the House debated the issue at length. He also promised that the vital bills and additional grants would be put down after the discussion was over.

The move symbolizes the popular mood in the general population in the death of Zubeen Garg since the popular singer had a strong cultural presence in the whole of Assam. It is important to note the role which was played by the Assembly in making this issue its high-priority issue during the very first day of the winter session. The debate should illuminate the issues that are expressed by the opposition members and answer such questions which have arisen after the unfortunate death of the singer.
