Mumbai: The Taj Story, the controversial courtroom drama starring Paresh Rawal, has collected a total of ₹19.55 crore at the Indian box office in its first 18 days. The movie had to face competition from movies like Haq, De De Pyaar De and The Girlfriend, and witnessed a significant drop in its collections on its third Monday, earning ₹0.15 crore.
The movie revolves around the Taj Mahal guide, the role played by Paresh Rawal, wherein he files the petition questioning the authenticity of this heritage monument. The narrative raises questions about who built it, why it was built, and whether it was a mausoleum or not. The film had already sparked debate before it drew audiences to the theatres. Sources reveal that the film was made on a budget of around Rs. 7-8 crores, and therefore, it is already a profitable venture.
What Numbers Reveal
The worldwide collection for the film stands at ₹24.25 crore, with ₹1 crore coming from overseas markets and a gross collection of ₹23.25 crore in India. The Taj Story is a courtroom drama that centers on a tour guide, played by Paresh Rawal, who files a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the accepted historical narrative of the Taj Mahal. Directed by Tushar Amrish Goel, the film features an ensemble cast including Zakir Hussain, Amruta Khanvilkar, and Namit Das.
Haq, another courtroom drama recently released, had received positive word-of-mouth but failed to translate into footfalls. Currently standing at Rs. 17.15 crore net, the movie is expected to wind its second week at Rs. 18 crore. It will then march toward its lifetime target, which is expected to be around the Rs. 20 crore mark.
Meanwhile, De De Pyaar De 2 is looking to collect Rs. 4.50 crore on its first Tuesday, witnessing a 20 per cent jump over Monday. It started its box office journey with Rs. 8.25 crore and ended its weekend at Rs. 33 crore. The running total of De De Pyaar De 2 now stands at Rs. 41.25 crore net at the Indian box office.
