On Tuesday, the US president Donald Trump will give Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman an exceptionally grand admission as the latter pays his first visit to the United States since the 2018 assassination of a journalist named Jamal Khashoggi. Though there has always been international indignation over the murder, Trump is setting up a grand welcoming, complete with fly-by, cannon salute and a big dinner, which is usually intended to honor a head of state and yet MBS is the de facto ruler, not the formal king, of the kingdom.
The two parties will enter into big defense and nuclear co-operation deals during the visit. One area Trump has focused on is improving a relationship with Saudi Arabia and in recent days has declared he will sell F- 35 super stealth fighter jets to the kingdom despite years of Israeli resistance to maintaining its military advantage in the region. Also, the sources state that the two countries will complete a civilian nuclear cooperation framework which has been a matter of conflict in the past.
The second critical point that Trump will discuss will be urging MBS to move towards normalizing relations with Israel since the US president was pushing a larger peace initiative to be enforced in the Middle East in the wake of the Gaza war. Trump referred to the upcoming meeting with Saudi Arabia not only as diplomatic activity but also, as he remarked, a way of honoring Saudi Arabia, the Crown Prince.
In the case of MBS, the trip is a chance to re-establish the relations with Washington as the international outrage surrounding the killing of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Although the US intelligence appraisals indicated that the prince gave the go-ahead to the operation, which Saudi authorities have refuted, the event left the US Saudi relations in a state of severe strains.
However, MBS and Trump have had positive relations, which have been strengthened through the hospitality and spectacular investment commitments of the Saudi leader during Trump in 2017 in Riyadh. However, now that the prince in question has landed in Washington and is courting a new collaboration, two leaders are seen keen to re-establish co-operation.
