According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), there will not be charges on mandatory biometric updates (MBU) made on children with a blue or baal Aadhaar card, which is given to individuals between the age of 5 and 17 years, in the first year. This ruling will take effect on October 1, 2025 and will provide families with the chance to complete both first and second updates of biometrics at no cost until the date. One year later, the standard charge of 125/update will be implemented again.
MBU (Mandatory Biometric Update) is a mandatory Aadhaar update, which must be done by children aged one of the two categories 5-7 years and 15-17 years. On these updates, biometric details of a child would be reliable and mature.
Those children that are enrolled in Aadhaar earlier than 5 years of age are given a blue Aadhaar card, though their fingers are not scanned nor scans of their iris are done at that age since their biometrics are not well-developed. No more than the most basic information, namely the name, the date of birth, the gender, the address, and the photograph is collected.
After the child has attained the age of 5 years, UIDAI requires the full biometric recordings:
- Photograph
- Fingerprints
- Iris scans
This is called as MBU 1 and though the entire biometric capture is used, the original Aadhaar number of the child is retained. It is checked as though a new enrolment, to make it accurate.
Once an Aadhaar holder attains the age of 15 they will be required to leave all biometric information again. This second update, which is named, MBU 2, is an assurance that the Aadhaar data would be that of a mature and stable biometrics of the person.
The approach adopted by UIDAI to give a one-year free MBUs will help in motivating parents and guardians to ensure that these essential updates are done in good time. Valid biometric information is useful in facilitating a smooth authentication process of services like school enrollments, scholarships, travel forms, additional government welfare programs etc.
